What is a Screw Conveyor?

A screw conveyor is a continuous conveying device that uses rotating screw blades to forcefully move materials; it is primarily used to convey various powdered, granular, and small lump materials. Screw conveyors feature a simple structure, excellent sealing performance, convenient operation, low power consumption, and versatility, capable of conveying materials horizontally, at an incline, or vertically. In a screw conveyor, the material does not move relative to the screw blades but is pushed toward the discharge end as the blades rotate. This enables sealed conveying, reducing material spillage and waste. Screw conveyors are cost-effective, have high conveying capacity, and operate smoothly and quietly, allowing them to perform special tasks that other conveying equipment cannot accomplish.

Working Principle

When the screw shaft rotates, material is driven forward by the combined action of gravity and friction between the material and the trough wall. Under the pushing force of the rotating screw blades, the material moves continuously along the bottom of the conveyor. This motion is similar to a non-rotating nut translating along a rotating screw. The primary conveying force is generated by the tangential and axial components of the blade rotation, which push the material upward and forward.

Structural Design & Material Movement

To maintain the screw shaft in a favorable tensile condition, the drive unit and discharge outlet are typically positioned at the same end, while the inlet is located near the opposite tail end. During operation, the rotating blades continuously push the material forward. The resistance preventing the material from rotating with the screw includes its own weight and friction against the conveyor casing, ensuring stable axial movement instead of rotation.

Blade Types & Mechanical Support

Screw blade design varies based on material characteristics, including solid (continuous flight), ribbon, and paddle types, to optimize conveying performance. A thrust bearing is installed at the discharge end to absorb axial forces generated during operation. For longer conveyors, intermediate hanger bearings are required to support the shaft, maintain alignment, and ensure stable, long-distance conveying performance.

A screw conveyor mainly consists of three parts: the screw body, the inlet, and the outlet. The core component is the screw blade mounted on the central shaft. The motor drives the screw blade to rotate, thereby conveying materials.
