What is a Lab Sieve Shaker?

Lab sieve shakers are designed for efficient and reliable sieving of powders, granules, and other solid materials. They typically consist of a motor that drives a vibrating mechanism, which applies motion to the sieve stack. This vibration helps to stratify materials based on particle size, providing accurate and reproducible results.

Common features include adjustable vibration intensity, easy-to-use controls, and compatibility with different sieve sizes. Furthermore, it is compatible with ultrasonic mesh deblinding units, same as ultrasonic vibrating sieves.They are used in various industries, including materials testing, pharmaceuticals, food science, and environmental analysis.

Working Principle

An electromagnetic vibrator is used as the vibration source. The vibration from the vibrator drives the screen machine to vibrate at the base, which is then transmitted through the base to a set of standard test sieves arranged from coarse to fine. At the same time, a vibration motor (or reciprocating mechanism) installed at the bottom performs precise screening of the material. As the material vibrates on the surfaces of the standard test sieves, particles smaller than the mesh size fall through to the next lower sieve. This process continues layer by layer until each sieve retains particles of the same size, thereby achieving separation based on different particle sizes.

  • The sieve frame is made of SUS304 (0Cr18Ni9) stainless steel with a 0.6 mm wall thickness and a polished finish.The mesh is securely fixed by tin soldering, ensuring stability without loosening and heat resistance up to 300°C.

How to Choose the Right Lab Sieve Shaker

Lab sieve shakers are primarily available in three materials: woven wire mesh, perforated plate screens, and electroformed screens. These three materials have different mesh sizes, and the choice depends on the material being sieved. As long as you have a clear understanding of the particle size of the material and the characteristics of the sieve mesh, it is not difficult to select the test sieve that meets your needs.

Woven wire mesh

Materials include high-quality stainless steel, brass, tin bronze, nickel, and molybdenum. They are low-cost and highly durable, but offer relatively lower precision, and the mesh may deform. The precision of the mesh can be controlled by enlarging or reducing the mesh size. Generally, manufacturers capable of producing high-precision screens must ensure mass production and select screens that comply with the GB/T 6003.1-1997 standard from a large inventory of high-precision screens; these are most commonly used in the diamond industry.

Punched metal screens

These feature uniform punching precision and are resistant to deformation. They are primarily used for screening large particles and come in both round and square hole configurations. They are commonly used in round-hole slag powder collection screens and round-hole sand and gravel screens. Electroformed screens: Manufactured using electrochemical methods, these offer the highest precision, theoretically reaching 1 micron. However, due to variations in manufacturers’ processes and molds, there is significant variation in quality.
